El Paso, Texas – October 18, 2016 – Workforce Solutions Borderplex, Vocational Rehabilitative Services and Volar Center for Independent Living will host a ceremony to recognize the 40 youth with disabilities and 11 employers who participated in “Breaking Barriers,” the summer employment initiative. The ceremony includes a keynote address by Mr. Salvador Balcorta, CEO of Centro de Salud Familiar La Fe, followed by testimonials, a presentation of certificates, and dinner.
Workforce Solutions Borderplex will also present the first-ever Employer Advocacy Recognition Award to Walgreens for their prominent leadership in the initiative through their ongoing commitment to hire individuals with disabilities. The media is invited to cover this event.
About Workforce Solutions Borderplex Breaking Barriers Summer Employment Initiative
Breaking Barriers is a groundbreaking program that focuses organizational resources on empowering youth with disabilities through transition planning that is individualized, person-driven and culturally/linguistically appropriate, beginning with summer employment. During its eight-year lifetime, Breaking Barriers has served more than 390 youth and 163 employers. Employers that participated in 2016 are El Paso Community College, Frontier Roofing Supply, GK Dreams Medical Supplies, Goodwill Industries of El Paso, Learning Avenue Daycare, Logan CDC, NBS Inc. Furniture, El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, Steinmart, Walgreens and WBAMC.
